Going on vacation doesn’t have to mean taking a break from doing your part.
There are several things you can do on your next trip to minimize your carbon footprint and often times you’ll save money in the process.
Before you leave home, turn your water heater to the lowest setting.
Turn your thermostat up in the summer and down in the winter.
Unplug appliances and electronics.
If you’re flying, get an e-ticket instead of a paper ticket
During your trip, use a digital camera instead of disposable ones.
Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it throughout the day.
Take earth-friendly transportation when possible. Walk, bike or take public transportation instead of renting a car or taking a taxi.
If you have to rent a car, rent a hybrid or a fuel-efficient model.
You may actually want to rent a car if you’re taking a long road trip and your vehicle isn’t fuel-efficient.
If you can, take the train instead of flying.
When you’re staying at a hotel, reuse your towels. Many hotels offer ways for guests to let them know it’s okay to not replace the towels or change the sheets every day.
Also, bring your own toiletries instead of using the small, prepackaged ones hotels offer. If you do use those travel-sized products, take them home, refill them and reuse them on other trips.
Finally, pack lightly. Whether you’re flying or driving, the lighter the load, the less fuel that will be consumed.
So take a vacation to forget about your stressful job, but don’t forget to Do Your Part everyday even when you’re away from home.
