Do Your Part At Work - Part 5 of 5 - Take the Stairs

We’re wrapping up our DYP at work series today with another way for you to reduce the energy needs and  carbon footprint of your company and you’ll burn calories in the process.

Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

According to  the experts at Elevator World, that elevator in your office accounts for up to 15% of your companies energy usage.

And the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that individuals who spend at least 10 minutes a day climbing up and down stairs could lose up to 10 pounds in a year and greatly increase their cardiovascular health.

There is much that we all can do to create more sustainable lives.... To take better care of our planet.  Challenge your company to do their part. Here is a list of tips that you can share with your co-workers.

1.Before You Print – Preview your document – make sure every page counts. Stock those printers with recycled paper!

2.Green Minds think alike – Look for Green companies/vendors to do business with.

3. Have Faxes arrive in your inbox. Receive faxes in e-mail form and save a tree! Cut out the paper and your office could save four trees a year on average.

4. Computers: Embrace power management such as sleep and hibernation modes. At the end of the day, turn off your computer and unplug it.  You could save $75 a computer each year.

5. Leaf it up! Use one plant per 10 square yards of office space to improve indoor air by absorbing nasty pollutants and exhaling fresh oxygen.

6. Take the stairs. It’s good for the bottom line! You’ll burn about 45 calories per 5 minutes of climbing and cut down on the company’s energy consumption.

7. Issue a DYP Challenge!
Green up the company’s 401k with environmentally responsible investment options.
Use rain barrels to irrigate company landscaping.
CFLs: as light bulbs burn out, replace them with Compact  Fluorescent Lightbulbs
Purchase carbon credits to offset company travel
Distribute recycling bins throughout office
Replacing old tired office furniture with desks and chairs made from sustainable or recycled materials.
