Plants That Tolerate Drought Conditions

Hot dry Carolina weather doesn’t have to lead to a lackluster garden.  There are many blooming plants that will put on a good show even when we don’t get enough rain.  The plants are drought tolerant so you'll be doing your part to conserve water if you have these in your garden.

Here are several that I’d recommend:

The butterfly weed is native to this area and will attract plentiful butterflies to your garden.

The hardy ice plant will add a bright fuchsia to your garden all summer long

Coneflower comes in many colors and also does well during the hot dry weather

Lamb’s ear is a spreading perennial with furry leaves for contrast.  It puts out a pretty purple flower in the summer.

Daylilies will bloom all summer long as will Salvia once established.

Of course every plant needs water, especially until it’s established but thereafter these require very little extra water from you.

All of these plants are perennials so  they will come back year after year.  So in addition to saving water you’ll be doing your part by saving resources that you’d otherwise use to put new plants in your garden every year.  You can find a list of trees, plants and shrubs that are drought tolerant by clicking here.
