Put Your Old Cell Phone To Good Use

Many of us have old cell phones tucked away in a drawer, just taking up space. But don't throw them out. Cell phones and accessories contain hazardous substances that need to be disposed of properly.  Do Your Part and give a working phone a second life or send that broken phone to a recycling center.

There are many ways to give a phone a second life.  First,You can Pass it down to your kids.  When you start your kids on a used phone you usually don't have to purchase an expensive phone or contract, you can just add a line to your account.  And kids are rough on phones so keep your old phone around for a replacement for when they lose or damage their phone.

Verizon Wireless will give your old phone a second life.  They accept old phones for their HopeLine program, which provides phones to domestic violence victims. Verizon will also recycle your battery for you. Just drop it off at any Verizon retail store.

- You can also recycle your cell phone at any Office Depot, Staples or Radio Shack store.

- Office Max will even give you a $3 store credit for every cell phone you drop off. You do have to sign up for their free rewards program to get the credit.

You can also donate your old phone to Goodwill or your local women's center. These organizations can provide you a receipt for tax purposes.
