Sponges

Cleaning up the kitchen is one of my least favorite jobs. But I know I am doing my part every time by making three simple choices. First lets talk about paper towels.  It's hard to give up the convenience but you can make a difference by using recycled paper products.  Now you are doubling the use of the paper and that's definitely doing your part.

Another way to do your part is to keep a drawer of  small towels.  I use inexpensive washcloths in my kitchen.   It takes less energy to make and wash these each week than it does to put towels made of virgin paper on the store shelves.

I still like a sponge to clean the dishes. We found these pop-up sponges made out of cellulose. Cellulose is found in wood, paper and cotton. Sponges made of 100% cellulose are natural unlike their counterparts that are made of rubber or plastic. Cellulose sponges are biodegradable. You can actually throw them in the compost pile when its time for a new one.  Plus, they're fun! The sponges come compressed with very little packaging. Soak them in some water and watch them puff up. Your kids will love them and they may even help clean without an argument.

Cleaning with natural, sponges and using cloth towels are simple ways to Do Your Part in the kitchen everyday. And it's not expensive.  It's another easy eco-fixes for under $10 that will help you tread more lightly on the planet and the green in your wallet.
