Dual Flow Toilet
Installing a low flow toilet in your bathroom will help you save thousands of gallons of water every year. But now there is new technology that will help you save even more water and money. Paul Stefano, the General Manager from Benjamin Franklin Plumbing showed me how you can customize your flush to save even more.
“If you pull up the lever it’s going to allow 1.1 gallons to clear the bowl and if you pull down it’s going to allow 1.6 gallons to clear the bowl. The reason that they are going to this is that you can lift up on it for liquids and push down on it for solids. As funny as that sounds that’s how it works and that’s how we are saving water” Stefano said.
Toilets made prior to the 1980s use three gallons or more of water for every flush. Now low flow toilets that use 1.6 gallons of water are the industry standard and a dual flush toilet means you save even more water.
Stefano says the technology is relatively new in the United States but that it has been in use oversees for quite a while.
A dual flush mechanism can reduce each toilets water consumption by nearly 70%. That’s a savings of nearly 6,000 gallons of water for an average household every year per toilet.
So if you’re in the market for a new toilet, buy a dual flush to maximize your savings. You can also upgrade your existing toilet by installing a kit to retrofit your flushing mechanism. You can find them on line at sites like this
