Question

"Is the moon made of rock?"
by: Sam G.

Answer

The moon is a rock, very much like Earth is also a rock. In fact, many scientists believe that the moon was made from pieces of the Earth. Billions of years ago a large rock hit Earth and there was a huge explosion. The rock was at least as big as the planet Mars. Pieces of rock and balls of gas were shot into outer space. Some of this gas and tiny pieces of rock started to grow together and made the moon. So the moon and Earth are made from things that are alike. They are both iron in the very middle, but the Earth has a much bigger and heavier iron center. They both have a rocky outside, but the Earth has oceans and the moon doesn't. The moon also does not have weather, or plants or people. Scientists who study the moon also think that the moon used to be much closer to Earth. It's been moving farther away from Earth for billions of years. Every year the circle that the moon makes around Earth gets bigger by about one and a half inch.
